Phoenix Green, Coalville

New foot/cycle bridge in Coalville Town Centre

"Town centre access for pedestrians and cyclists, combined with environmental improvements"

Now that this scheme has been completed local residents and visitors to Coalville will have better access to and from the town centre. The previous old stepped bridge prevented access for disabled people along with many who are elderly, have young children or who want to use their bike to get into town. The new bridge now provides a safe route, along a pleasantly landscaped open area, for all members of the community.

Organisation: Leicestershire County Council

Completion Date: 28/02/2005

Location

Coalville, North West Leicestershire

Project Description

The Phoenix Green project will provide a major boost to the vitality and attractiveness of Coalville and will help begin implementation of the regeneration master-plan for the town centre. It is an excellent example of partnership working to deliver improvements to the urban infrastructure and environment - Ernie White, Cabinet Lead Member for Community Services, Leicestershire County Council

The scheme is being developed by Leicestershire County Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the cycling charity, Sustrans.

Improvement details
A new civic space will be created to open up views through the town and create a seating/picnic area and landscape planting. In addition, a new "Toucan" crossing will be provided across London Road.

The scheme will provide much better access to schools and shops, particularly for disabled and elderly people and for people with pushchairs and shopping trolleys. It will also improve safety, provide a much more attractive environment and overcome the last major obstruction on the Stratford-upon-Avon to Derby section of the National Cycling Network.

Outcomes

  • Proposals for Phoenix Green featured at the recent Town Centre Master Planning exhibition and were welcomed by the local community.
  • Almost 170 questionnaires were returned with the great majority backing the plan. Most people agreed that the scheme should be a priority for regeneration and were looking forward to work starting as soon as possible.
  • It is anticipated to cost £785,000 and funds for the project have been pledged from the LSEP, Sustrans, the Big Lottery Fund, the Onyx Environmental Trust, the National Forest Company, Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), and the county and district councils.
