Looking for leaders
Navigator is Common Purpose's leadership programme for the rising generation of individuals tipped as people to watch in their organisations or as leaders in communities. The project will invest in the next generation of leaders for the city and its adjoining areas by providing them with the knowledge, networks and opportunities needed to develop a local leadership with broader perspectives.

Varied backgrounds and skills development
Participants will come from different backgrounds in terms of sectors and from all the communities in the area. The content of this programme, called 'Navigator', has been extensively developed as a result of running in other areas (e.g. Northern Ireland, Bradford) and will be adapted to address the issues and needs specific to the sub-region of Leicestershire.

More specifically, the project will look to develop the skills, knowledge and networks of the participants to better enable them to become engaged in high-level decision-making and board-level roles in community and public life. The programmes also focus on on experiential learning and problem-solving.

Outcomes

Engaging the younger generation

  • Engaging a generation too old for youth programmes and too young in their communities and organisations to have the traditionally expected level of experience to take on leadership roles as citizens.
  • Building the knowledge, diverse networks and experience which will serve them as they do become engaged as citizens and so allowing them to do so at an earlier age.
  • Providing Leicester/Leicestershire with more young citizens with the capacity to add value to their sub-region.

Widening the group of decision-makers

  • We intend to increase the confidence, awareness and ability of people from all communities, particularly for individuals from ethnic minority communities and people in the 20 -30 age group because they are under-represented in the decision-making processes that impact on their communities.
  • We seek to increase the number of informed individuals who are actively involved in shaping the future of the area in which they live and work.

Sharing of knowledge

  • We also seek to share specialist knowledge so that it becomes general knowledge and to encourage collaboration between individuals, sectors and organisations.
  • By influencing existing and emerging leaders we aim to influence their decisions and the way in which their organisations work for the benefit of society as a whole. Thus local areas and communities benefit from better leaders, wider networks and stronger communities.
