"Refurbishment of historic and architecturally-important buildings"
A scheme of grant-aid to provide regeneration through the repair and refurbishment of historic commercial and community buildings and public open spaces in selected rural conservation areas.
Organisation: Leicestershire County Council
Completion Date: 31/03/2006
Location
Leicestershire
Project Description
'The character of Leicestershire rural centres derives in no small part from their buildings and their settings. Creating a future for rural centres can often be led by finding a use for and investing in our most important historic buildings' - Ernie White, Environment Lead Member, Leicestershire County Council
Background
The scheme, administered by Leicestershire County Council's historic building conservation experts, provides grant-aid and technical advice to selected commercial and community buildings of historic or architectural importance, in specific conservation areas throughout Leicestershire.
Heritage and the future
Partnership funding ensures an enhanced level of grant-aid, the partners being LSEP, English Heritage, and the District Councils. HERS recognises the crucial role that historic buildings and areas can play in generating local pride, creating a sense of place and leading in regeneration initiatives that form part of a sustainable future for these key local settlements.
Outcomes
The Leicestershire Rural HERS is an innovative scheme providing funding across a range of key rural centres identified through the Leicestershire Rural Partnerships.
