Employment Land Study

Organisation: Leicester City Council
Completion Date: 10/05/2004
Location
Leicester
Project Description
This is a study of the quality and quantity of employment land in Leicester.
Leicester’s total employment growth in the last decade has been slower than the national average.
Manufacturing is heavily over represented in Leicester (24% of total employment vs 15% nationally) and office sectors are under represented. It has therefore inherited an unfavourable economic structure.
The Leicester Regeneration Company (LRC) was set up in 2001 to address these issues and to deal with large amounts of derelict / underused centres, in the St Georges, Old Tam, Frog Island, and Abbey Meadows areas.
Leicester also has a large number of ageing properties inherited from the textile and knitwear industries in other areas of the city.
This project has appointed BE Group consultants to study the quality and quantity of employment land in terms of both land and premises in the city. This will provide a full and accurate picture of the property and land that is available for employment use and will also indicate the future trends/needs for property to accommodate future growth.
This will also develop a means of testing the Local Development Framework proposals for redevelopment in order to assess the justification for loss of further employment land.
Outcomes
An Employment Land and Premises Study report, due to be published in November 2005.
