Developing the Woodland Economy

Developing the Woodland Economy

The Toolkit gives farmers and landowners an easy-to-use guide that also fits into a pocket

"A pocket-sized 'Toolkit' for landowners wanting to create farm woodland based on experiences in The National Forest"

The Toolkit provides, in an easy to read and useable format, information that can be used by landowners considering creating new woodland.

Organisation: The National Forest Company

Completion Date: 31/03/2004

Location

The National Forest covers parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire

Project Description

I am frequently asked by landowners in The National Forest why should they consider creating new woodland, what type of woodland they could plant and how they could do it. The Toolkit answers these queries, poses more questions and highlights other sources of information. It fits in a coat pocket, is concise and is designed to be used in the field - Dr Hugh V Williams, The National Forest Company

Woodland opportunities
All woodland, regardless of where it is located, gives opportunities that far exceed the trees.

Woodland can help landowners to diversify their landholding and business interests, create commercial and/or amenity woodland and can be linked with work that enhances or creates opportunities for recreation, access and tourism.

The National Forest
Although every woodland scheme may have its own set of unique particulars, the extent and depth of experience within The National Forest has demonstrated that there are robust guidelines that can be applied to most situations.

Outcomes

Trees planted

  • The National Forest is transforming 200m2 of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. To date, five million trees have been planted ? ultimately 30 million trees will be planted, which will cover a third of the Forest area.

Toolkit benefits

  • The Toolkit concentrates on drawing together in a compact format the many lessons learnt and provides a basis for further thought and consideration by a landowner. It will be applicable both within the Forest and elsewhere nationally.
  • The publication of the Toolkit is part of a wider process of creating woodland cluster groups, highlighting the sustainable economic value of woodland and developing land-based business expertise in the Forest.

Other benefits

  • Related work included studies on the quantification of the Forest resource, the nature of forest-based businesses in and around The National Forest and independent certification of the National Forest Company's woodland at Newton Road, Heather.
