"Demolition of derelict boiler house and build of new community centre"
The original concrete pad of the boiler house is being retained as the foundation for a new community building and for the provision of additional car parking.
Organisation: North West Leicestershire District Council
Completion Date: 31/03/2004
Location
Measham, North West Leicestershire
Project Description
The project has the full support of the local community, where there is a clear need for such a facility - Councillor John Lewis, North West Leicestershire District Council
The Riverview Estate, Measham was formerly served by a coal-fired district heating system based in large boiler house located in the centre of the housing estate. This central system was decommissioned in 1994 and the boiler house presented a hazardous, neglected and insecure site that blighted the general character of the estate.
A new community building has been built through a 'design and build' (D&B) contract, providing a hall, a kitchen, and toilet facilities
Outcomes
- The council has retained ownership of the building and a lease has been agreed with the Tenants and Residents Association for use of the building by the association and by estate residents. It is intended that the building becomes self-sustaining in its' financial costs.
- Expressions of interest in using the building have already been expressed by external agencies, including a 'home-work' and after-school club and a nursery initiative, together with mother-and-toddler facilities.
