The project seeks to make the best of the ethnic food heritage in Leicester, working with relevant companies in the city to create a benchmark of high standards and to gain competitive advantage.

This project will investigate fully the benefits of centre of excellence for food manufacturing, driving towards this status by 2010.

First stages
The review includes detailed business analysis, gap analysis and comparative data analysis of the existing ethnic food producers in Leicester and to bench mark them against companies demonstrating best practice within the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

The first stages of this project will also identify the key barriers to Leicester food companies achieving centre of excellence status. It will measure the opportuntities available through thorough and detailed market investigation, which will look at the supply chain, the likely areas of market opportunity worldwide and the commercial advantage that may be exploited were such a vision to become reality.

Other benefits
Part of the review of possible benefits will also capture the likely effect on tourism and the external perception of Leicester, as well as benefit to food manufacturers, restaurants and other food producers.

A steering group of ecconomic development partners and food companies will also be formed to drive the vision forward.

Outcomes

  • Engage with 40 companies involved with food production in Leicester; and complete a detailed business review.
  • Form a steering group to form the vision of Leicester as a centre for food manufacturing excellence.
  • Provide a basis for driving this vision forward with achievement of centre of excellence status by 2010.
