Project Description
"I was delighted that Bosworth Battlefield was awarded this grant. It has enabled work to be carried out to provide a permanent restaurant on the site. This is the first and vital phase of a comprehensive plan to revitalise this nationally important visitor attraction". Ernie White Cabinet Lead Member, Community Services.
About the site
The Bosworth Battlefield Visitor Centre was opened in 1974 and was redeveloped in 1985 to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Battle of Bosworth. It is located close to the historic battle site and is managed by Leicestershire County Council.
Replacement of visitor café
This project has resulted in the site's previous cafe' which was based in a portacabin being replaced with a better-quality catering facility, which opens from Easter 2005 on a permanent rather than a seasonal basis.
Outcomes
Details of new facility
The Tithe Barn Restaurant has been built around the original medieval timbers from a tithe barn, which once stood in Sandiacre, Derbyshire. It will serve teas, coffees, light refreshments and meals. It will also be available for private functions.
Future plans
The restaurant is the first phase of a planned development of the whole site which will involve revamping the Exhibition, building and Education Room and carrying out archaeological research to try to precisely locate the various elements of the Battle of Bosworth.
