Agar Nook Economic & Environmental Regeneration

The Davy Lamp pub in Agar Nook has been transformed from a run-down state to provide business and community facilites

"Improving life on a housing estate through physical enhancement"

Whilst the social aspects of regeneration are already being addressed on the estate through a wide-ranging Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) programme, this new scheme will build on existing activity to tackle the key issues of physical, economic and educational regeneration, which still remain as key problems for the area to overcome.

Organisation: East Midlands Housing Association

Completion Date: 31/03/2006

Location

Agar Nook estate, Coalville, North West Leicestershire

Project Description

The re-development of the former Davy Lamp pub in the centre of Agar Nook is vital to these plans. The pub will be converted to provide three or four new shops. The general store will also re-locate to the site allowing the community centre to expand so that we are not only supporting local businesses but also helping to boost community facilities - Pat Elderfield, Chief Executive, East Midlands Housing Association

A number of crucial projects are planned to develop local community initiatives, improve business and economic prospects and increase recreational opportunities for both the young and elderly living on the estate.

Improvement details
These include the refurbishment of the currently derelict Davy Lamp pub to create three new commercial units, a new estate office, additional community space and residential accommodation.

The local environment will also benefit significantly from improvements planned for the core area of the estate surrounding the abandoned pub. Enhancements to the main pedestrian routes running through the estate and the primary school grounds will also contribute to the development of the physical surroundings.

To increase the safety of the local residents, the lighting on the estate will be upgraded to complement the CCTV system currently in place.

Outcomes

Directed by the East Midlands Housing Association, working together with the Regeneration Division at North West Leicestershire District Council and supported by the LSEP, this regeneration scheme commenced in May 2004 and is due to cost a total of £1.2m.
